How To Install a Mobile Home Ceiling Fan
Ceiling Fan
Installing a ceiling fan in a mobile home is a great way to improve air circulation in a confined space. This will save energy and money as well as taking the strain off of any air conditioning system that may currently be installed. There are a variety of different designs and sizes to choose from that can give a unique look to any mobile home.
This process requires a limited knowledge of do it yourself skills and can be completed by following a logical sequence of steps.
Tools and Materials Needed:
Screws
A Screwdriver
A Ceiling Fan Package (With instructions)
Lock Washers
Wire Clips
Circuit Breaker
Small Ladder
Step 1 – Remove Light Fixture
Locate the light fixture where the ceiling fan will be attached to the ceiling. Make sure the power to this light has been turned off and use the screwdriver to unscrew the fixture. Store it away in a safe place until it is needed again. Take great care and time to make sure that all wires are disconnected from the light fixture. If this is ignored then key wires may be ripped away from the ceiling when the previous light is removed.
Step 2 – Assemble Ceiling Fan
Carefully take the ceiling fan out of the package. If it is not already factory assembled then take some time to assemble carefully. Most unassembled ceiling fans will simply require the blades to be attached and the wall mount, or hanging bracket to be constructed so the fan will fit onto it. If this does have to be done personally, follow the recommended instructions carefully. Often, it is easier to leave the blade assembly until the unit is hanging in place but this can be determined by the overall size of the fan.
Step 3 – Attach Hanging Bracket
Take the screwdriver and attach the hanging bracket onto the back of the small box located at the top of the fan. Do this by using the screws and lock washers and follow the location points within the instructions that come with the ceiling fan. Once attached, place a small amount of pressure on the hanging bracket to ensure it is tightly fastened and unlikely to break. Fixing into a wooden joist is a great idea to promote extra strength.
Step 4 – Connect Wires
Use the ladder and take as much time as is needed to connect the wires in the ceiling fan box to the wires that were previously connected to the light fixture. This is an important step because it will mean the electricity of the mobile home can power the fan motor. Usually, wiring is fairly straightforward and like-for-like colours can be joined with connector block before being covered in insulating tape. Detailed schematics will be provided with the fan for further assistance.
Step 5 – Secure and Hang
Make sure the ceiling box cover is closed once the wires have been connected and tighten if needed. Use the mounted hanging bracket to hang the ceiling fan and turn it on to make sure the power is flowing fully. If the blades have been left until this stage, turn off the power and fit them before operating the fan again.
