How to Fix a GE Electric Dryer

Electrical

GE electric stand-alone dryers tend to have the same problems as many other brands: bad belts, heating problems and various noises. All of these problems require a similar approach for diagnosis and repair. Most GE dryer parts are commonly stocked items that can be found at any appliance store, so you don't have to worry about a long wait on parts.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Phillips screwdriver

Torx screwdriver

5/16 inch nutdriver

Ohmmeter

Step 1

Disconnect power to the dryer before servicing it. The heating components run on 240 volts AC and can be dangerous.

Step 2

Open the door on the dryer and look for screws that go through the top of the front panel. Remove these screws--they may be Phillips or Torx-headed. The top panel is free; fold it up and back out of the way. Remove the two 5/16 inch screws that go through from the side panels to the front. Swing the front to the right and out of the way.

Step 3

Find the idler-pulley that is beneath the tub. It is a wheel that the belt is looped around, and it is located next to the motor.

Pull the idler-pulley away from the tub and let the belt slip free. Some models may require you to loosen the belt from a service panel in the back. Pull the tub out of the cabinet when the belt is free. This gives access to the heating element pan and drum bearing.

If the belt is broken, simply loop a new belt around the tub, motor and idler pulleys.

Step 4

Check your heating element to see if any part of it is broken. Run a continuity check on the element using an ohmmeter. Pull one wire free from the heater prongs and check from one prong to the other. If there is no continuity, replace the heating element.

Step 5

Check the condition of the drum bearing that sits between the back of the tub and the back wall of the dryer. This bearing can cause a squeaking sound if it is bad. If it appears worn or misshapen, replace it with a new drum bearing. The new bearing will slide on to the little shaft on the end of the drum. Make sure that it doesn't fall off when putting the dryer back together.
