Test the Electrical Components

Step 1

Take note of what's not working on the machine. Do the lights turn on when the coffee maker is plugged in? When you switch the power to the "On" position, does the coffee pot warmer get hot and do you hear the internal heating element attempting to boil the water?

Step 2

If the machine doesn't show any lights when plugged in, try a different outlet. If it still doesn't work, use a replacement electrical cord. If this doesn't solve the problem, remove the back and bottom of the coffee maker (after unplugging it) with a screwdriver.

Step 3

Using a multitester, test each of the electrical circuits to ensure they are operating correctly. If the circuit is broken, replace it.

Check for Mineral Deposits

Step 1

Life the top of the coffee maker (the section that you pour water into). Examine the heating rod along the side of the maker. If it has white or gray rock-looking residue built up on it, you need to remove mineral deposits.

Step 2

Take the filter brew basket out as well and look inside, by the dripping element, to see if there are mineral deposits in the brew basket as well. If you notice buildup, you will need to clean your coffee maker.

Step 3

Mix one part water with one part white vinegar and fill the water basin of the coffee maker. Allow the mixture to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before brewing. Brew a full pot of the vinegar/water solution and allow the hot solution to sit in the coffee pot for 15 minutes. Rinse the pot and brew basket with water and observe the parts again to see if the mineral deposits have been removed. If they are still present, repeat the vinegar wash until the parts are clear of any deposits.
