Ceiling Fan

Knowing how to dismantle a ceiling fan mainly involves knowing the order in which you need to remove parts. Ceiling fans are popular appliances in domestic homes - the fan blades keep the air circulating, and optional lamps installed on the fan keep the room well lit. But at times it becomes necessary to remove them, either for repair or replacement. It is possible to do so by following these steps.

Step 1: Preparation

Clear out the area underneath the fan, set up a ladder, and get your tools ready. It is best if you have a partner to hold the tools, stabilize the ladder, and get the parts from you as you take them off the fan.

You want to make sure the power to the fan is completely turned off. Do this by turning off the appropriate circuit breaker to the fan and surrounding area. Make sure you have enough light to perform the job after the power has been shut off.

Step 2: Removing the Fan Blades

Normally, metal armatures connect the blades to the motor. From your toolset, you should identify which screwdriver to use and proceed to unscrew each of the fanblades. Keep the fin firmly held in one hand and unscrew the armature with the other. Perform this on all the fins until just the motor is left attached.

Step 3: Removing the Housing

There will usually be a protective housing around the motor. You have to first remove this housing by unscrewing it at the base. Once you remove all the screws, it will just slide down over the motor and can be removed.

Step 4: Loosening the Motor

Now the motor is completely exposed. Examine how the motor is attached to the ceiling. Hold the motor in one hand and carefully remove the bolts that connect it to the ceiling area. Once the bolts are removed, the motor will be connected to the ceiling only through wires. Continue to support the motor with one hand, because if you let it go you will cause stress on the wiring which could damage them.

Next find an aluminium junction box. This is what contains the wiring. In some cases, these boxes have a through bolt running through them to give the ceiling fan more support. If you see a bolt, you have to unscrew that as well before you can dismantle the fan.

Step 5: Removing the Wiring

Before starting this stage, make sure once again that the electricity is turned off. Identify the wires that come out of the fan motor, and trace them to the wires that are coming out of the ceiling. The sets of wires will be joined by plastic caps. If you disconnect these caps, you will disconnect the fan motor wires from the ceilng wires.

Once all the wires have been disconnected, the ceilng fan has been completely dismantled. Make sure that the tips of the wires hanging from the ceiling are covered with electrical tape or plastic caps until they are used again.
